Andy, CF-L1, CF Gymnastics, USA Weightlifting Level 2
After starting CrossFit in February 2010, Andy found his niche. Coming from a background of soccer, wrestling, and the U.S. Army, CrossFit came to be the program that put everything together. He attained his CrossFit Level 1 certification in West Palm Beach, FL at BGI CrossFit during August of 2010, completed the CrossFit Gymnastics certification later that month, re-certified in 2015 at CrossFit High Performance in Orlando, FL, the USA Weightlifing Level 1 Sports Performance certification in August 2011, USA Weightlifting Advanced Performance (lvl2) in Dec 2015, and has been training and programming for Da Vince Gym since February 2010. He is happy to train those who want to be trained; the kind of people that give 100% effort instead of 100% excuses!
Andy is from St. Louis, MO and enjoys photography, drag racing, playing guitar, fishing, playing sports, and CrossFit.
-Do you have a nickname?
I have called myself Andyman since I was 5 or so, my dad calls me ‘A’ or ‘A-man’ and my mom calls me ‘Andy panda’ or ‘andy wandy’ and other distinguished titles
-What got you started in CrossFit, and how long have you been doing it?
Marc W. got me started when he gave his initial class to a small group of us, Steve W. said I should go back and join them for the intro so I did, and wound up missing the first wod the next day because I forgot my clothes. Melissa gave me an earful for that and I haven’t missed a day since! My first wod was on February 1st of 2010, a date which will live in infamy because I was HURTING.
-Do you have any memorable CFCC moments?
I had played around on the rowers while escorting the janitors in the gym (before it was the gym, and before we started crossfit there). There was only the rowers, treadmills, and the mat and I went all out on a 500m run, it was probably over two minutes but holy crap did that screw me up. I laid on the mat for the next 15 minutes waiting to pass out but didn’t
Every day is memorable though, they’re never the same!
-Do you remember your first wod? What was it and how did it go?
I don’t remember it to a T but it involved rowing and broad jumps (I think). I know I consistently stopped on the row to ‘catch my breath’… like I thought I was going to get it back haha
-Do you have any fitness goals?
Mostly just numbers to hit on the lifts, and a lot of times to reach on various wods.
-Do you play any sports now, or are there any you have participated competitively in the past?
I’ve played soccer since I was able to walk but have only been okay at it. In high school I wrestled for two years and that is an awesome sport. Other than that, I like to play catch!
-What wods are your favorites?
Hmmm I think any wod that doesn’t make me wait a long time to recover enough to do one more rep is my favorite. I like to go nonstop.
-What exercises are your favorites?
Rowing and double unders since I consider myself to be very proficient at them
-What one exercise makes you fill with fear when you see it posted?
Hand stand pushups, press, push press, pushups, ring dips, basically anything that involves pushing with my arms in any direction. Super weakness of mine for some reason, and always has been.
-What is your greatest CrossFit accomplishment?
A few weeks ago I deadlifted 405lbs which is a lot for me. When I first started the deadlift I couldn’t hardly do 315lbs. The other big achievement was finally learning how to eat real food. That was the hardest transformation but it was the best one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-What is a typical day of nutrition for you?
Nowadays I try to stick to the Paleo regime of lean meats, fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds. This is wayyyy easier than you think and is really really great.
-What is your favorite food?
Probably still pizza
-What is your favorite music to workout to? Or listen to in general?
Metal! And 80’s rock and metal, some 90’s too.
-What is CrossFit, to you?
A huge part of my life, and will be for the rest of it.
-Where do you see yourself one year from now, fitness-wise?
Stronger, faster, healthier. That’s probably copyrighted though.
– Do you have any hobbies outside of Crossfit?
I like to take pictures, and be somewhat involved with the local car scene however that’s been absent since starting crossfit. I’m always finding small projects to keep myself occupied too.
– Tell us something about yourself that we may not know.
I look exactly like my dad when he was my age. People have actually confused the two of us in pictures and in person.
